38° N, San Francisco......'Matthew Turner'

Barry, our blue water sailor and shipwright, has been building the 'Mathew Turner' tall ship in SF for a couple of years and is out sailing on New Years Day.

Matthew Turner - named after the “grandfather” and historic big time wooden ship builder, the educational tall ship took over 4 years to built. It’s the first tall ship built in the Bay Area in 85 years, 132-feet long, 25 feet wide and weights a total of 175 tons. It will have a total of 11 sails. The foremast is 70 feet by 19 inches and weighs 3,600 pound. Hundreds of volunteers dedicated countless of hours building this ship. The overall cost is $6.3 million.

The Matthew Turner saw the first ray of light Friday March 31, 2017 as it was moved out of the building tent. The next day, April 1, it was released into the water and tugged to its final location close to the Bay Model in Sausalito, where it will be completed. It was a big milestone for the Matthew Turner and a unique event for the entire sailing community.

The Matthew Turner will serve as an educational learning platform for Bay Area youth through 'Call of the Sea'. It will soon sail in the Bay Aera and along the Pacific coast. Maybe to Hawaii as well?
