Commemorate, celebrate and earn freedom in Doetinchem

DOETINCHEM - Commemorate the fallen, celebrate the liberation and realize that freedom also requires responsibility. This message was conveyed by Mayor Mark Boumans from Doetinchem during the May 4 commemoration in the Mark Tennantplantsoen.
The park, in the center of the city, is named after the major of the Canadian Cavalry Highlanders, the liberators of Doetinchem in 1945. Boumans referred to the 16-year-old Gerard, who had to flee with his family in March 1945 when Doetinchem was bombed three times .
He drew a parallel with the equally old Syrian boy Yassine, who lives with his family in an asylum seekers' center in Amsterdam. Their home has also been shot in ruins, they too had to flee war.

Bill Cole, honorary citizen of Doetinchem

One of the many listeners was the 96-year-old Bill Cole, honorary citizen of Doetinchem and carrier of a high French distinction. Cole traveled with the Canadians from Normandy and was involved in the liberation of Doetinchem. He met the local beauty Erna, married her, and they had three daughters. Until last year he lived in the city center, now he is being nursed in Zutphen.
It was reporter Henny Haggeman who told the fascinating story of Cole about an hour after the commemoration of the dead. That happened on a stage on the other side of the park. Since last year, following the commemoration, a festival has been held in the park.

Performances

Artists such as Emma and Wies, opera singer Maria Fiselier and singer Tino Martin performed. It remained dry and despite the cold it was quite busy. The same stage is taken on bands like Nos Tres and Andrew's Night Out on Liberation Day. Various DJs are also on the program. The festivities on Sunday start around 1 pm.
