Varsseveld Volksfeest........4 days.....and history

The Varsseveld Folk Festivals were kicked off with these people and wagons

VIDEO AND PHOTOSVARSSEVELD - The start of the Varsseveld Folk Festivals is never just a start. For some, the allegorical parade is the highlight of the festival. And don't just let this be a procession: it was the fiftieth edition. With a route through the center, many could enjoy the anniversary edition with beautifully decorated cars.
For those who could not be there: Saturday morning at 10.30 am the large cars will depart from the former town hall, where the award ceremony will be held half an hour earlier.

Titbits..... the history

Varsseveld Volksfeesten: 'normal' party with loaded history

VIDEOVARSSEVELD - Everyone in Varsseveld has the date circled in red in his diary: today the Varsseveld Folk Festivals are starting again. For four days Varsseveld celebrates and the village is dominated by the parade, the fairground attractions, music and the royal shooting.

Tonight the parade goes through the village from 6:30 pm. The prize giving ceremony will take place on Saturday morning at 10.00, after which the cars will make a festive tour of the village from 10.30. In the tent complex next to the Van Pallandthal there is live music every day, from Anita Meijer to the Boetners and from a Guns' n Roses tribute to the Snollebollekes. On Sunday morning there is a free pancake breakfast. Then the Club Cash Competition starts: Varsseveld associations compete with each other to fund the club cash with 400 euros.

Loaded

History is just how ordinary it is for the people of Varsseveld to celebrate with the entire village. The fair had once started as a church feast, but the excesses during the festivities became a thorn in the eyes of the church council. It was believed that the fair was a way of celebrating, which "certainly did not raise the moral standard of the population." A request was submitted to the municipality to abolish the fair, as was already the case in many surrounding villages.

Disconnected from the church

In 1899 the fair was indeed officially abolished. Under the name 'folk festival' the event continued as usual, on the understanding that from that moment onwards the festival would be completely separate from the church. But these folk festivals also brought criticism. A Christian Orange Association was established alongside the Volksfeestcommissie.

Independence Party

In 1913 it was a hundred years ago that the Netherlands was freed from French rule. In Varsseveld people wanted to celebrate this Independence Party with the entire population, but the Volksfeestcommissie and the Christian Orange Association were not in line. It was decided to let every club have its own party. The issue even reached the national press.
It was only fifty years later that people approached each other again, which resulted in the founding of the General Orange Association. The first AOV party was held on 10, 11 and 12 September 1964. The new-style Varsseveld Volksfeesten were born.
