Maarten is discovering and exploring new nature areas all within biking distance and close to Heelweg.

This is a story about a 'boogieman' who snatches kids...and you can see an arm sticking out of the water in the billabong.
The translation is by machine and is a bit off

The bourgeoisie is under the deck. So do not come too close to the water.

There are no more children in Zelhem frightened for the 'boelekeerl'.But some parents in the Achterhoek would occasionally like to call this bogeyman out to warn their offspring. Beware of the ditch, the pool, the well! Or as they used to say in their dialect: 'The bunch of coins is under the deck! Do not hesitate to pour dense bi-j or water in the vortex! He still lives among the people of 'Zellem' and neighboring Halle, especially in the countryside between the two villages. Otherwise, farmers and outdoor people from this neighborhood would not have enthusiastically mentioned walking directions to each other and given a threatening arm as a logo - the arm with which the evil spirit wants to pull you under water.
In 2001 they developed the idea for the route. In the area that was heavily relocated during a major land consolidation in 1996 / '97, local residents wanted to offer the opportunity for a varied walk. Through forest, moor, swamp, grassland, fields and open water. This private initiative has now been carried out with the support of the municipality, the IVN, the Staatsbosbheer, the water board and the neighborhood. Within a year they had it done, there were bridges and the signage was in order. At Boldiek farm a 'house' arose, where you can read 'at your convenience' directions. At the opening, storyteller Herman Peppelman raked the story of the 'boelekeerl'.
It must have happened some 150 years ago, halfway between Zelhem and Halle. Traffic you hardly had here, only with horse-and-cart you came through the heath and the peat. Life was heavy and poor. No wonder that at night a hare or a rabbit was poached. As an old farmer once said: 'I can not do the under-kitchens anyway.' In this context, according to Herman Peppelman, the story about the bogeyman happened; he had heard it from his father, who had told him to never talk to anyone about it. Hermans father had it again from his father, and he knew it from his father, Rooie Arie. They all promised to remain silent. But now that the neighborhood was going to build walking paths through the peat, Herman decided to break the oath to his father and tell the story.
The story comes down to the fact that Mieneke van Jan Bannink, a twenty-year-old girl, was ambushed by an invisible spirit on the heath and pulled into a pond. She would certainly have died if Rooie Arie (Hermans great-grandfather) had not heard her cry for help. He jumped into the water, mowed the ghost arm with his scythe and saved the young woman's life. He has buried the arm in the chicken coop. Afterwards, Arie warned his son that the 'bourgeoisie' would keep a hundred and fifty years, but would undoubtedly become active again. So, Herman said to the local residents of the Heidenhoekse Vloed nature area: 'Promise me that you point out to the people to keep their children away from the water, because that is a huge amount!'
The Boelekeerlspad only has 6 kilometers. Yet it is a varied route. You will occasionally pass a farm that often carries the history of the area in its name: Reugebrink, Rietstroet, Nijman (the new man), Nijenkamp (new camp). There is also a farm coming from a poorly parceled area. Furthermore, field names tell about the past: camps and enken, the Eggeldersgat (eg the common name for leech and hole represents a layer of marshland) and dykes (which remind of the exploitation of the wet heath) such as the Priesterinkdijk, the Jolinkdijk (a real racetrack, but not named after Normaal-singer and chunk pilot Bennie) and Stadsedijk.
During the land consolidation, the nature area the Heidenhoekse Vloed was developed, where the 20 to 80 centimeter fertilized top layer of the building land was excavated and the original sand reappeared. The greasy soil here used to be deposited by winding, ever-overflowing streams. Nature seems to have a good memory, because after a year the pioneer plants from the past came back. Like the lovely plant tar guichelheil, which was observed for the last time in the Achterhoek around 1850. The impoverishment of the soil has given many more nearly extinct plants a chance.
It is beautiful strolling on the Boelekeerlspad, especially when you suddenly see two egrets in the spotlight. Tree frogs predominate in the pools and a special cellar is inhabited by overwintering bats. Caution is therefore required, or as one of the tips is: leave only your footprints.
The nice thing about the isolated hiking trail is that there are approach routes from three sides: from Halle, Castle Slangenburg and Zelhem itself. The latter (11 km) is definitely worth it because of the rural peace that you walk through. To make that clear, we kept track of who we encountered along the way: 1 postman, 47 horses and ponnies, 1 ostrich, 1 bambi, a couple of turkeys, a flock of sheep, an artificial cow and an artificial horse and the two egrets. So no farmer's cut: the postman was a woman.

It is a similar story to the 'swaggie'  who drowned in a billabong in Australian folklore and the words to famous Aussie song 'Waltzing Matilda'.
Almost the Ozzie national anthem.

Waltzing Matilda song words.

(Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong

Under the shade of a coolibah tree,

He sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled

You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda

You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me

He sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled,

you'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
Down came a jumbuck to drink at the billabong,

Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee,

he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag,

you'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda

you'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me

he sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag,

You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me
Up rode the squatter, mounted on his thoroughbred,

Up rode the troopers, one, two, three,

With the jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?

You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda

You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me

With the jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, you scoundrel with me.

Up jumped the swagman and sprang into the billabong,

You'll never catch me alive, said he,

And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong,

you'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda

You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me

his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong,

You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.

Oh, you'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.)
